Episode Notes
Half a century and more than 500 church building projects have taught the HCMI team lessons that no textbook can provide. In this episode, we open the vault and share the insights that have shaped how we approach every new project. These are the things we wish every church knew before they broke ground, and the patterns we have seen repeated across denominations, building sizes, and decades of changing construction markets.
We begin with design decisions: the choices that stood the test of time and the ones that congregations came to regret within a few years. Flexible multi-use spaces, thoughtful mechanical system choices, and building envelopes designed for Ontario's climate are themes that come up again and again. On the other side, we discuss the temptation to cut corners on items that seem minor during construction but become expensive problems down the road.
Fundraising is another area where experience matters enormously. We share what has worked for Ontario churches of different sizes and demographics, from capital campaigns and pledge drives to creative community engagement strategies. We also discuss the fundraising pitfalls that can strain relationships within a congregation and how to navigate them with care.
Perhaps the most important lesson of all is the value of not rushing the planning phase. Churches that invest adequate time in visioning, feasibility, and design consistently end up with better buildings, healthier budgets, and stronger congregational unity. We share real stories from Ontario churches (with details anonymized) that illustrate why patience during planning pays dividends for decades.
